March 6, 2012 Jewish Studies lecture

A Conversation with
Avner Faingulernt

March 6, 2012
Humanities Theater
6:00 PM

Avner Faingulernt is head of the film program at Sapir College, in Sderot, Israel. A filmmaker whose work explores the interactions between Israelis and Palestinians living along the border between Gaza and Israel, Faingulernt’s documentaries have been featured in Israel and abroad.

Men on the Edge: Fishermen’s Diary (2005) has been called a “gripping observation” of Israeli and Palestinian fishermen who interact with each other on a small beach between Israel and Gaza. War Matador (2011) explores the phenomenon of "war tourism," when people gathered at the Gaza border to observe the shelling of Gaza as spectators. War Matador was featured in the 2011 Jerusalem Film Festival.

Faingulert will screen portions of his films, and discuss the particular challenges of dealing with the sensitive subject matter of the Middle East conflict in documentary format.

This lecture is the Roberta Barkan Memorial Lecture of the Jewish Studies Program, a lecture series made possible by the Smart Family Foundation.

Cosponsored by the Jewish Studies, Cinema Studies and Film Programs of Purchase College.

Admission to this special event is free of charge, and open to the public.
